Editor’s Preface
The majority of the entries within this dictionary were originally published in the 1925 book, Masonic Enquire Within. Subtitled A Glossary or Explanation of 1001 Questions Relating to English Freemasonry, at the time it was considered a more accessible source of information than Albert Mackay’s Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and its Kindred Sciences. In order to update the original information, additional events, facts and entries have been included, drawn from a variety of sources for which permission has been obtained wherever possible.
Freemasonry is a universal tradition, encompassing myriad diverse and extensive subject matters. This book is primarily aimed at English Craft Freemasonry, not purely from a standardised perspective but also in acknowledgement of the sheer scope of information that could possibly have been included. To fulfil its general purpose of enhancing your Masonic knowledge on a regular basis, the entries are drawn from the established tradition and describe terms you may frequently encounter on your personal journey within Freemasonry.
As the list of entries is by no means exhaustive, please contact the Editor should you feel that a relevant or important entry has been omitted – we would be most pleased to include it in further editions.
